I'm a San Francisco-based journalist and editor. Partial to Vladimir Nabokov, who said that "curiosity is insubordination in its purest form," I've focused most recently on political and investigative stories related to the environment, profiles of unlikely environmentalists, and special projects tied to climate change and green living.
I've also freelanced travel stories for the New York Times. For one of those, I think they chose me because I was the only one crazy enough to partake in a two-day cross-country ski trip in Yosemite when I did not really know how to ski and was not in altogether great shape. I've also done the odd piece for "This American Life," an investigative piece on vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's record on environmental toxics for The New Republic; an investigative article on a poorly functioning federal program to test chemicals for Discover; a story about "green chemistry" and an interview with philosopher John Searle for California; and an in-depth look at the Navajo Nation's view of the death penalty for Mother Jones, among other things. My work has also appeared in Harper's, The Los Angeles Times, NPQ, and Sierra.
With wide-ranging interests and a sense of wonder at the workings of both humans and nature, my stories run the gamut. For a sampling of my work and abilities, please wander through my site. Welcome.
